  • The Slickrock Trail
    Rating: 6

The Slickrock Trail winds through dense trees and over huge granite slabs on the way from highway 4 to Utica reservoir. Although relatively short, this scenic trail has plenty of challenging spots. There are also several excellent places to camp.

Requirements: To participate in TTORA Slickrock runs you must have 4WD. Rock sliders and lockers recommended.

Directions: From highway 4, turn south at the west end of Lake Alpine. There are signs for Lake Alpine Campground. Stay to the right as you approach the lake. The trailhead is about three quarters of a mile from highway 4.

Gas Up: If you are coming from the west, get gas in Jackson or Sutter Creek. If you are coming from the east, get gas in Tahoe.

The Slickrock trail begins from the south side of highway 4 on the western shore of Lake Alpine. A short way into the trail there are a few really nice campsites on the edge of Silver Creek.
A short hike across Silver Creek and up the ridge from the campsites you will find a primitive shelter.
There are plenty of awesome views from the Slickrock trail. Much of the trail passes over huge granite slabs.
Many spots on the trail are very tight. Full sized vehicles are not recommended.
Some of the steeper sections require a bit of care, although traction is pretty good if the granite is dry.
The obstacle near the southern end is the most difficult spot on the trail.
